Life goes on with all its Beauty & Gifts

Halloween Party at CasaHeli

Kim has not lost his witty sense of humor

It has been over 2 months since I last made a blog entry.  By now you’ve probably assumed that things are stable with Kim and that I keep on inching toward a ‘new life’ without him. That has been the case to an extent except that there have been hiccups along the way and I am still seeking meaning to a life without Kim by my side.

At the end of August I returned to the U.S. to continue the process of decluttering and disposing of non-needed items from our home, a task I had to give up after 2 weeks of insane hours and unduly stress. I tried to take a short vacation to Bar Harbor ME in early October with friends which turned out to be a bit of an ordeal! I ended up having to cut short the ‘vacation’ mainly because I got a call from Colombia letting me know that Kim was being taken to the hospital’s emergency: he was vomiting blood 😬

Even though Kim sounded okay over the phone when I spoke with him while they waited for the ambulance to arrive, I decided to rent a car at the nearest available car rental in Bangor and drive 670 miles back home overnight, clocking a total of 770 miles in 24 hrs with the extra drive to return the car rental at the airport! I wasn’t sure I still had the ‘truck-driver, long-haul driving skills’ Kim used to say I had.

After a lot of testing at the hospital, they found a stomach ulcer which they cauterized. They also gave him blood to restore his blood levels. This made him very energetic and alert. It may have been the healthy plateless and hemoglobin cells that were in the new blood.

Upon returning to Colombia I found Kim again very stable, eating great meals, but saying that he misses me greatly. He does think he’s still in the US; thinks I am just out running errands; is dead serious about one of the residents at the center being his brother Chris, often calling him to chat; and he now says that the center is his home which gives me peace of mind.

  2. Maria, seems like you are living a very busy life. I am glad you got away for awhile with friends in the USA. And, that when you got back home, Kim was okay. That is comforting to know that Kim thinks his brother is living with him. Does he have a brother Chris? Take care!

    1. Hi Paula!

Thanks so much for your message! I really appreciate it. Yes, Kim has a brother called Chris! He lives in Maine and they were fairly close. Hope you are celebrating this thanksgiving with people you love. And, no, I have not forgotten December 14 😊

      1. Maria,

Time goes by so quickly! We met around 40+ years ago. I can’t believe that I will be 71 years old in a few days.

  3. Thanks for the update, Maria.  I think of you both often and wonder how you’re doing.  Especially when our sailing memories pop up!   Happy Holidays to you all!  Will you be seeing Daniel and Lauren this year?   Lynne

    1. Hi Lynne!

Thank you for your message. I think about you and Paul too as well and I hope you both have a wonderful holiday. Unfortunately I’m in Colombia, Daniel is still in Little Rock, and Lauren has been in Germany since October. Daniel’s training has gotten delayed but after the first week of actual hands-on ( on the plane ) training he was the lead pilot of this huge cargo plane: the CJ 130. Can you believe it?

I hope your kinds are doing great too. Would love to know how they’re doing when you get a chance.

Sending you & Paul a big hug 🤗

  4. Maria, thanks so much for your update. I can’t imagine the stress you are under. It’s too bad that you had to shorten your break in Bar Harbor and have such a long drive to get home! I’m so glad that they were able to get Kim’s ulcer taken care of. I hope you are able to have some relaxed time with Kim while you’re in Colombia.

This holiday season is going to be tough because Bill went into the hospital December 26. At least Steve and family will be here at Christmas.
