2020 Kim & Maria – on one of our long distance trips
Kim’s cognitive disabilities resulting from the 2 TBIs he suffered in 2011 and 2013 were in ‘steady state.’ After so many interventions and treatments at top institutions and brain injury hospitals such as TIRR in Houston & John Hopkins, he reached a plateau around 2017 and then started to decline slowly. TBIs often result in frontal lobe injury, in addition to whatever other part of the brain is injured, which often leads to frontal lobe dementia. Kim has been exhibiting this as shown by a brain scan done at John Hopkins in 2018.
What was so sad to me is that, this wonderful man who was a great husband, an amazing professional so dedicated to his work to fight discrimination and help this country, was now having to battle this disease. And I, committed to staying by his side throughout all the trials we had endured, needed to continue to carry the baton and get ready to fight one more death and life battle.
