Three Weeks at the Hospital

The John Hopkins Kimmel Center hospital stay could not have be better in terms of patient care ( Kim was a assigned a sitter all the time). The nurses and techs were outstanding and the oncologists on the floor were attentive, informative, and very competent.

Kim’s corner and spacious room had an amazing view of Baltimore. Yet, it is still a hospital and not home and Kim longed to be home.

Yet, Kim’s 3-week stay in the hospital from February 21-March 14 was difficult. One major difficulty he had was with needles. He is a ‘hard stick’, as the nurses call a patient whose veins are nearly inaccessible, specially when installing a catheter. It took hours and their most specialized phlebotomists, using sonar equipment, to find viable veins. It was painful!

Fortunately, Kim has always been good about medications and hospital visits. However, I was called in to be with him on day 2 to help keeping him calm when re-installing a catheter he yanked out.
